Tezpur Bar Association

History of Tezpur Bar Association

The Tezpur Bar Association traces its origins back to 1859, when two pioneering legal practitioners, Late Nabin Chandra Bose and Late Ramchandra Sen, began practicing at the Tezpur Court. Their efforts laid the foundation of the Bar.

For nearly a decade, no new members joined, but between 1869 and 1888, four additional pleaders became part of the Bar, formally establishing the Association with six members. The Bar gradually expanded, reaching a strength of 14 members by 1898.

The year 1889 marked a significant milestone with the entry of notable personalities such as Late Lambodar Borah, who made remarkable contributions to Assamese literature and society. Although he passed away in 1892, his legacy remained influential.

Over the following decades, the Bar continued to grow steadily. Prominent figures like Late Bodhnath Patangia (joined in 1914) and Deshapran Lakshmidhar Sarmah (joined in 1927) enriched both the legal fraternity and Assamese society through their contributions.

Between 1929 and 1938, the Association saw further expansion with the inclusion of several distinguished members. Growth continued in subsequent decades, particularly after India’s independence, with consistent increases in membership.

Today, the Tezpur Bar Association stands as a prominent and well-established institution with a strength of over 700 members, contributing actively to the administration of justice.

The Association is housed within the Tezpur court campus in two modern RCC building, reflecting its growth, development, and commitment to providing improved infrastructure for its members.
